Special Training: Instructor Rating

"An opportunity to share the magic of flight with others"

By obtaining your Instructor Rating, you are able to teach others the magic and wonder of flight, and at the same time continue to build your hours and experience. The course is structured to help you not only achieve your own goals, but also have the ability to share your knowledge, skills and experiences to your future students. Ground School Training is conducted concurrently with practical flying experience. Personal attention by highly qualified Grade I Instructors allow the trainee instructor's personal needs to be addressed on an individual basis. If you have made the commitment to be a Flight Instructor, we will help you achieve your goals.

Requirements to complete Instructor Rating

  • Must hold a current Commercial Pilot's Licence
  • Must hold a Night VFR Rating or Command Instrument Rating
  • Complete a course of instruction in Instructional Principles and Methods of at least 12 classroom hours
  • Complete a course of flight instruction of not less than 50 hours flight time consisting of:
    1. A minimum of 50 hours dual instruction with a Grade 1 Instructor
      OR
    2. A minimum of 30 hours dual instruction with a Grade 1 Instructor, with the the remaining 20 hours flown as either:
      1. Mutual practice with another trainee instructor
      2. Practice instruction with a flight instructor acting as a student pilot.

Flight Training

The flying component of the course is a total of 50 hours:

  • 30 hours of dual training is structured to teach you to instruct in each of the flying sequences.
  • 20 hours of mutual flying with a fellow trainee, or a flight instructor enables you to practise and consolidate the skills learnt during your dual training.

Aircraft

Piper Tomahawk

The Piper Tomahawk has a proven track record in the field of basic training. It has a side-by-side seating configuration with dual controls, and has excellent visibility. The tomahawk is powered by a piston engine which is horizontally opposed with well proven reliability.
